For sale is a vintage 1968 Conn model 14D single French Horn. Usually single horns are reserved for beginner/intermediate level players.
But some pro players use them. This horn was recently(I just got it back a week ago) serviced by my instrument tech. He straightened out a wrinkle in the bell, smoothed out all reachable dents, flushed and cleaned the instrument, and also restrung all the keys with new nylon string. I wasn't entirely sure what model this horn was, but my tech said it was definitely a 14D. He does instrument repair for all the local schools, so I'm sure he has worked on a number of these horns. Overall the horn is in as nice a shape as it can ever get. It has about 90% of it's original lacquer.
You should know there is one good-sized dent on the part where your left hand would be when playing(see pics) It was. Too far into the horn for my tech to correct.
There's also 3 or 4 far smaller dents in hard-to-reach places. The bell shows a few SLIGHT dings and of course typical scratches. Otherwise the horn is pretty smooth and looks great. If you look closely at the bell and the area before it you can see where it was smoothed out. I'm not entirely sure where this horn was made. The bell is just engraved'CG CONN LTD USA' And the serial number is in the 30,000 range with an L prefix(signifying 1968 of course) I see some clashing information here and there about exactly when Conn started making instruments out of Abilene, some people are saying late 1960s(1968ish) while others are saying early 70s.
In my personal opinion, I think it's an Abilene french horn, but I'm not entirely sure. I asked my tech to inspect the rotors and he says it has straight rotors, as opposed to slanted. The Abilene models are supposed to have straight ones, from what I've read. Older Elkhart french horns are considered to be far superior quality. That doesn't nessecarily mean it's a bad horn, just not as good as an Elkhart. It's definitely LEAGUES above the cheap Chinese ins.

T his is an older Conn Single French Horn. I believe it is a 14D. Serial number N56768 dates this to the late 1970. This is not in playing condition. The lead pipe will need to be replaced. The rotor valves are in good condition. But they are missing some of the screws and one valve cap.
The bell shows signs of dent work and is in pretty good condition. With some work and small parts, this should be a good playable horn. There is no mouthpiece. The case is in very poor condition and will need to be replaced after shipping.

Serial number is HJ140034. Comes with a Holton Farkas Model MC Mouthpiece and a Conn case.
This french horn is in overall good condition and it plays and sounds good to me. As you can see there are some smaller dents and scratches on the horn but overall a nice looking horn.
The lacquer is worn and spotted in some areas but nothing bad in my opinion. The horn could use a cleaning and polishing to make it look and sound its best. The tuning slide s are free. T he valves work well and feel good when played. The bell has some dings and worn lacquer and some scratches as you can see but again nothing real bad.
Please look at all of the pictures to judge the condition for yourself. There is a Holton Mouthpiece and Conn Case included. The Conn case has some loose covering inside and needs.
Cleaning but otherwise good to use. Please see pictures for condition and ask questions if needed. This is a NO RESERVE auction and Low Starting Bid! It comes to you in used fair/ good condition. Showing some definite signs of dents, dings, scratches and worn finish. All three of the valves are intact and move freely and are operable. There is no valve stick and no frozen slides. There are also no parts missing from this instrument.
I have identified one spot where a tube will need some solder work to another tube. I also noticed that there is one spot where there has been a pipe splice made. Amongst the dents on this horn there is one section of tubing with quite a few dents on it.
While some of these could be banged out, the buyer may choose to cut out this section and spliced with a new piece of pipe. The instrument still. Plays but there is NO mouthpiece included with it. The hard plastic case included but it is also in good condition.
The inside is basically clean with no major tears to the carpet lining. The outside shows some small signs of use wear. This includes a dent in the case with a small crack to one side of the bell end of the case. All three latches are intact and in perfect working order. The carry handle is also in very good and not broken condition.

This is a Conn French horn. Serial number, L82337.
This is a brass instrument- not silver, like the thumbnail pic may suggest. Key of F.Photo anomaly) The horn needs to see a tech. The inner slide has come loose on the third key. See pics) the inner slide is not stuck. The instrument still plays as is.
Also, that same outer tube has come loose at the valve. The first key is a little noisy- adjust or replace the cork. The bell area looks pretty good and straight. I do see some tiny dimple dings on the bell) You'll find scratches scattered throughout. You'll find some small dings along the top tube, and some other tubes, as the wrap, but none are major. The worst dent is on the 1st tube crook- see last pic.
